Hibiscus brews to a deep ruby red with a naturally tart, cranberry-like edge. The fruit juice rounds that tartness out, which is why Juicy Tea tastes like fruit rather than like a herbal tea someone sweetened afterwards.
What goes in, and what doesn't
Every bottle starts the same way: a fresh brewed infusion of hibiscus flowers and water. From there it is fruit juice concentrate — apple, pear and grape as the base, then the fruit the flavour is named for. Citric acid and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) keep the colour and flavour stable.
There is no caffeine, no carbonation, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours and no artificial sweeteners. Our Original and Frozen Concentrate lines contain no added sugar at all — the 10g of sugar per serving comes entirely from the fruit. The x Lemonade line adds real lemon juice and a small amount of cane sugar, which brings it to 4g of added sugar per serving.
Choose your line
Original — 8 × 16 fl oz
Hibiscus and 100% fruit juice, nothing else. 50 calories and 0g added sugar per 8 oz serving. This is the one to start with if you want to taste what hibiscus actually does.
x Lemonade — 8 × 16 fl oz
The same hibiscus base with real lemon juice and a touch of cane sugar. Brighter, sharper, more like a lemonade stand than an iced tea. 60 calories and 4g added sugar per 8 oz serving.
Frozen Concentrate — 24 fl oz pouch
A frozen pouch you mix yourself, and the best value in the range. One pouch makes roughly 16 servings. Pour the pouch into a pitcher and add 72–104 oz of cold water: 72 oz for bold and juicy, 104 oz for light and refreshing. For a single glass, mix 1–2 oz of concentrate with about 6 oz of cold water. Still or sparkling both work.
Variety Pack — 8 × 16 fl oz
A spread across the Original and x Lemonade lines. The straightforward way to work out which flavour is yours before committing to a full pack.
The four flavours
- Apple + Raspberry — apple, pear and grape juice with raspberry. The most classic of the four, and the easiest crowd-pleaser.
- Apple + Cherry — apple, pear, grape and aronia berry with cherry. Deeper and darker, with the aronia adding a soft, dry finish behind the cherry.
- Blueberry + Pomegranate — apple, pomegranate, aronia and grape with blueberry. The richest of the four, and the one where hibiscus's tartness reads most clearly.
- Kiwi + Strawberry — apple, pear and grape with strawberry and kiwi. The lightest and greenest of the set.
How to serve it
Cold, over plenty of ice. Hibiscus tastes flat when it's lukewarm and sharper as it chills, so give it time in the fridge. A lemon or lime wedge lifts the Original line; a sprig of mint suits Kiwi + Strawberry.
The concentrate is more flexible than the bottles. Mix it with sparkling water for something closer to a soda, stretch it long over ice on a hot afternoon, or use it as the base for a lemonade by adding fresh lemon and a little sweetener. It also freezes well into ice pops.
Keeping it fresh
Bottles are best kept refrigerated and enjoyed cold. The frozen concentrate keeps for up to three months in the freezer and about seven days in the fridge once thawed. Because this is a fresh, minimally processed drink rather than a shelf-stable one, treat it more like juice than like soda.
